Bear Cub Scratchbord Workshop

In this scratchboard class you will get hands-on experience and create images the Bear Cub by removing rather than adding material—a reversal of how most people think about drawing. Nancy will guide beginners from start to finish. 

You’ll start by using chalk to draw the image on the board, learn scratching techniques and the use of inks for color. The scratchboard is a rigid surface coated in white clay and then covered with a thin layer of black ink. Instead of using pencils or brushes to build an image, you’ll use sharp tools to scratch away the black surface. Each mark reveals the bright white beneath.

The class will start with an introduction to tools and mark-making. You learn how different pressures and strokes create textures, fine lines for hair or feathers, broader strokes for highlights. Scratchboard tends to humble beginners at first, but often becomes deeply satisfying
